This cartel appears to have originated after the capture Miguel Angel Félix Gallardo in 1989 which precipitated the demise of the Cártel de Guadalajara which fragmented into two cartels; the Cártel de Sinaloa (under the leadership of Joaquín Guzman Loera, “El Chapo”) and the Cártel de Tijuana (under the leadership Ramón Arellano Félix).
